in other words, mothers have their best interest in mind not their sons. most assuredly not their husbands.

I think the “just be yourself” meme came into being, not out of malice, but because of an inability for women to empathize with men.

I think most women are quite empathetic with those they consider their equals or in some way beneath them. But I find that many women have a default setting where they think men always have it better than them. If a man is in pain, it’s nothing compared to labour. If a man is sick, he still is better off than a woman. No matter what problems a man may have, women are worse off, so men should mind their privilege.

Thus, when a boy or young man asks women what he should do to be successful with women, women often have a hard time empathizing with him. They know that women need to do all kinds of things with their appearance – to stay in shape, put on make-up, dress nicely, etc……and they don’t think that men need to do these things. They think men are better off, and so all a man really needs to do is to BE HIMSELF, unlike a woman who needs to do so much more.

Of course, there is also the element of apex fallacy, where the men who only need to “be themselves” are, in fact, men who only need to be themselves. But I do think that lack of empathy is part of the problem.
