With weight in men, I wonder if this has SES differences? Obviously with so many men and women being obese and overweight in the US currently, there are many, many men and women in relationships who are obese and overweight. I suspect that most of these are “assortative”, in terms of fat people realizing that they are most likely to be able to attract other fat people rather than people who are fit, and deciding they would prefer to be with a fat person than be alone. However, in some SES segments, being fat is a bit of a bigger no-no. In the white UMC for example it’s a sign of failure and lack of discipline and can disqualify easily at the time people are looking for mates. Most UMC whites are not gym rats with hard bodies, but most are reasonably fit and not fat when they are at the time they are looking for a spouse, and a good number of them (not all of them) maintain that appearance (fit but not buff) well into their 40s and 50s — the fat ones are not completely shunned in that community, but they are certainly looked down upon and talked about behind people’s backs (just as it is with the minority of white UMCs who divorce).
